Accessories, Accessories, Accessories!
This project will explore the use of accessories in photography. There are lots of things that accessories can be used for, and there are many ways that you can emphasize certain aspects and features of your model by incorporating accessories into the photograph.
Try showcasing the accessory in a multitude of ways:
· Set the accessory onto a piece of brightly coloured fabric, or perhaps a black blanket to emphasize the shine or colour of the item you are showcasing.
·
You could also try to take portrait photos of a model wearing the item.
· Head shots are perfect for advertising necklaces, head gear (like hats, scarves, barrettes, ribbons).
·
If you want to focus on glasses try different methods of cropping the photos, maybe just a cut photo of the eyes, or the top half of the model’s face.
There are lots of creative ways to play with accessories on and off of models, so be creative and try many different things!

The Portrait
Your next assignment in the photography unit is the portrait photograph. There are a few things to consider when taking portraits.
Keep it simple. Keep your backgrounds (and foregrounds) uncluttered, work with natural light where you can, if you have to use artificial light keep it simple and use as few lights as possible.
Consider lighting. Where do you want your light focus to be? On the face, behind your subject, or beside your subject?
Consider your position. Try shooting from slightly below your subject’s eye line. This can be accomplished by bending your knees just slightly so you are a little lower than your subject. This slightly lower position is often flattering for many subjects. You may also want to shoot from above, getting higher than your subject. Do not forget where your lights are though!
Consider what your subject is wearing. You might want to create a certain mood or atmosphere in your photograph. If so, try altering what the subject is wearing to change the mood and tone of the picture.
The focus of the photograph should be your subject, mostly the face, so your picture should show at most just below the shoulders to above the head. It can show as little as a frame of the face or even a portion of the face, or as much as the upper body and head.

None of us have access to the high tech aids to enhance our photography. We do not have perfect white backdrops, or awesome flashes, so what we need to do is learn how to adapt. Make a habit of choosing a setting that best suits your surroundings. Learn to use other tricks and tools like the angle of sun, the lighting in the room, lamps, flashlights to create drastic or harsh lighting, or even a scarf over a lamp to soften the lighting or alter the colour.
Note that you do have the option of changing the tint and darkness of the photo while you are editing it, but for a more natural appearance, try to alter the true lighting during the photo shoot.
Your assignment:
Take a series of photographs using at least 3 different lighting styles.
µ You should have at least 3 clear photos for each different lighting style (a total of at least 9 photos).
µ Post your photos with a description of your choice of lighting styles onto your blog.
